What is a crappie brake and how does the CoPilot improve on it?

A crappie brake is a transom-mounted trolling motor used on the stern to slow or stop the boat while approaching fish. Traditional setups use a simple on/off switch — full power or nothing. The CoPilot crappie brake controller replaces that binary switch with a variable speed controller that gives you 0–100% proportional control over both stern motors independently, plus the ability to pivot your boat in place using independent left/right motor operation.

What trolling motors work with the CoPilot?

The CoPilot works with any standard fixed-angle transom-mount trolling motor — including Minn Kota, MotorGuide, Newport Vessels, and similar stern-mount motors used as crappie brakes. It is compatible with 12V, 24V, and 36V power systems. Note that the CoPilot is designed for transom-mount stern motors only — it is not compatible with bow-mount motors like the Minn Kota Ultrex or Garmin Force.

How does independent motor control work?

The CoPilot controls your left and right stern motors completely independently. Consequently, you can run one motor forward and one in reverse simultaneously, which causes your boat to yaw (rotate) in place without moving forward or backward. In practice, this means you can pivot 90° or 180° to reposition on structure without ever moving away from the spot — a major advantage when working tight brushpiles or precise structure.

Do I need the foot pedal or is the wireless remote enough?

The wireless remote (included with both packages) is a 4-button handheld controller — great for precise handheld control or when your fishing partner needs to operate the system from the bow. The foot pedal upgrade ($100 additional) adds a diamond-layout floor controller that keeps your hands completely free for rods and net. For tournament anglers and guides, the foot pedal is worth every penny. For casual fishing, however, the wireless remote is usually sufficient.

Can I use all three controllers at the same time?

Yes — the pedestal controller, wireless remote, and foot pedal all work simultaneously. You can switch between them mid-maneuver without any mode switching or button combinations. Whichever controller you use last takes effect immediately. As a result, your fishing partner can hold position with the wireless remote while you use the foot pedal to make fine adjustments.

How difficult is the CoPilot to install?

Installation involves wiring the CoPilot dual controllers between your boat battery system and your two stern trolling motors. Most anglers with basic electrical knowledge complete installation in 2–3 hours. Furthermore, the CoPilot includes all necessary hardware, and installation guides are available in our YouTube video library. Will the CoPilot work with just one stern motor?

The CoPilot is designed for dual stern motor setups with two independent controllers. However, basic variable-speed braking works with a single motor connected to one channel. The pivot and rotation functionality specifically requires two motors. Contact us before ordering if you have a single motor setup and we can advise on the best configuration.

What is the difference between the two CoPilot packages?

The base CoPilot System ($375) includes the pedestal controller and wireless remote — everything you need for full variable speed and independent motor control. The CoPilot Complete ($475) additionally includes the foot pedal, which gives you hands-free operation using a four-button diamond layout on the floor. If you guide clients, fish tournaments, or simply want to keep both hands on your rod while controlling the boat, the Complete package is the right choice.

Yes — the CoPilot and LiveScanner QuadScan are designed to complement each other perfectly.
