How the Breakaway Protection System Works

The breakaway mechanism sits between your motor shaft and output pole, functioning as a protective connection point. Under normal operation, two spring-loaded ball bearings lock into slots in the output pole, transferring motor rotation directly to your transducer. However, when your transducer encounters a stump, rock, or submerged debris, the impact force compresses the spring and pushes the ball bearings out of their slots. Consequently, the output shaft spins freely until the balls re-engage — protecting your motor from the shock load that would otherwise cause internal damage.

The breakaway is a reusable component designed to protect your motor indefinitely. However, replacement is necessary if you notice any of these symptoms:

Critical Removal Warning: Before removing the LiveScanner head assembly, you must first loosen the set screw that secures the breakaway to the motor shaft. This set screw is accessed through the side of the head coupling. If you remove the head without first loosening the set screw, the spring-loaded ball bearings will shoot out of the end of the motor shaft and be lost. Consequently, you will need to purchase this replacement kit to restore function. Always loosen the set screw before attempting to remove the head assembly.
